Our guide to May Half Term fun

Not sure how to keep the kids entertained or screen-free this half term? Discover our top picks for fun-filled activities and attractions in Kent and Sussex during the school holidays.

The South East is the ultimate playground for kids seeking fun and adventure, and with the warmer weather finally here to stay, we’re focusing on the outdoors, where Kent and Sussex truly shine. From wildlife parks to paddle boarding, to theme parks on the coastline and hands-on experiences. Grab your little explorers, pack your sense of adventure and leave the ipads behind. Let’s embark on some good old-fashioned outdoor fun.

What’s on in Kent for free

Who says you have to break the bank to have a good time? Kent offers plenty of free activities for families to enjoy. If the sun is shining, head to the charming coastline at Whitstable for a seaside stroll. If you’re bringing your four-legged friends, then walk round to Tankerton Beach, which is dog-friendly all year round.

Pack a picnic and head to one of Kent’s many parks, such as the dog-friendly Mote Park in Maidstone or Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells. Or for our serious walkers and nature enthusiasts, plan a hike along the North Downs Way stretching across 150 miles from Farnham to Dover. With over 15 recommended sections, you can start to plan your walking route here.

What’s on in Sussex for free

Over in Sussex, the options are just as tempting. If you like a coastal view, plan a long walk and picnic along the South Downs, which offers 3,300km of trails for walking, cycling and horse riding. Our favourite spot along the South Downs National Park is the Seven Sisters, with picture-perfect cliffs from Seaford and Eastbourne.

A slow-paced day in Rye, wandering the cobbled streets, is always a win. Especially with the golden beach of Camber Sands just a 5-minute drive beyond, perfect for fish and chips and building sandcastles. For more ideas on East Sussex, check out our travel guide.

Outdoor Adventures for Kids

Kent’s stunning landscapes provide the perfect ground for outdoor adventures like cycling, horse riding or paddle boarding. Head to Bedgebury Forest and cycle through the woods or brave the treetop ropes and zip lines at Go Ape.

If the kids are feeling brave, try kayaking or paddleboarding in Canterbury with Canoe Wild. Or along the Kent and Sussex border (the county line passes through the lake), you’ll find Bewl Water, the largest reservoir in the South East. The 800-acre park is packed full of healthy outdoor fun, offering soft play, laser tag, and water sports. If you’re feeling fit, hike the scenic trail around the lake, which is a total of 12.5 miles.

Family-friendly attractions in May half-term

If you’re looking for a day out that will fill the kids with excitement, then dive into a world of wonder at the award-winning Dreamland in Margate, Kent. Here you can let them loose on the rides and embrace the retro charm. Dreamland is on the seafront, so you’ll be spoilt for choice on fresh fish and chips as well as an abundance of ice cream parlours.

For our animal lovers, a trip to Howletts Wild Animal Park or The Big Cat Sanctuary makes an unforgettable adventure where boredom is simply not an option.

Special Events and Festivals

Go big at Knockhatch Adventure Park in Hailsham, with thrilling rides, animal encounters, splash pads and play areas. And day out the kids will certainly thank you for.

Rock The Mote in Maidstone returns for the 6th year (maybe leave the kids at home for this one!) Featuring some of the UK’s best tribute performances celebrating artists from both past and present. Be sure to book tickets in advance.

Hidden Gems to Explore

If you’re after something a little different this May Half Term, here are a few hidden gems off the beaten path.

The Shell Grotto in Margate is a mysterious underground network of tunnels decorated with millions of shells. Your kids will be fascinated by the intricate shell patterns and mysterious origins of this unique attraction.

Or visit the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a miniature steam railway that offers a scenic journey through the Kent countryside.

Educational and Cultural Activities

Make the May half-term educational but keep it fun with a day exploring fairytale-style castles like Bodiam. This May half-term Bodiam Castle has launched a brand new quest inspired by How to Train Your Dragon, where their imaginations can run wild with treasure maps and mischief.

Hop aboard a heritage steam train for a journey through the countryside. The Kent and East Sussex Railway has transformed its carriages into hands-on creative play filled with thousands of LEGO and DUPLO bricks ready for building. Check out the Bricks on the Move event here.

For our nature lovers, try out Wildwood Trust and go nose-to-nose with more than 200 British animals set in 40 acres of ancient woodlands, then head to the kids’ play area and burn off some energy on the zip lines and climbing walls.
