For big family reunions look no further than Lower Standen Farm, sleeping up to 24 guests, this large dog-friendly holiday home just outside of Tenterden offers a swimming pool and extensive gardens. For something slightly smaller but fit for the whole family, see The Oast in Newenden. It was once an original Kent oast house built for drying hops and making beer, but has now been lovingly restored and converted into a comfortable holiday home.

 

What’s in the area

Tenterden is also renowned for the Kent and East Sussex Railway, a heritage steam railway that adds a nostalgic touch and offers a great day out to Bodiam with kids. Head to the Woolpack pub for a lovely lunch after, or for chic dining try Water Lane, The Walled Garden restaurant. It’s a lovely, well-hidden find offering bistro with a twist. 

Tenterden is a great place for wine enthusiasts, head to Chapel Down for the finest sparkling wine and most famous British winery. Nearby, Biddenden Vineyard holds cellar-door tastings, and you can walk the estate to take in the fantastic views. Towards Staplehurst, just a further 10 minutes drive away, Balfour winery at Hush Heath will draw you into its American-style tasting rooms, all glass, and steel, with sophisticated English cheese platters to accompany the English whites, sparkling, and reds.

Known as the ‘Jewel of the Weald’, Tenterden offers the best of all worlds: fascinating history, a wealth of Georgian and Victorian architecture, and excellent shopping. From crafts and antiques to books and other gifts, you’re bound to find something you love while shopping in the town. Visitors can also visit the historic Smallhythe Place – an early 16th century shipyard, farm, and later home of distinguished Victorian actress Dame Ellen Terry – before exploring the beautiful Hole Park Gardens. Top off your day with a trip to the nearby Chapel Down Winery and enjoy a glass of the good stuff while overlooking the stunning High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Families will love the Kent & East Sussex Railway, which travels between Tenterden and Bodiam – home to a 14th-century moated castle with a ruined interior features spiral staircases, battlements, and a portcullis. You can explore history even further in Tenterden Museum, which holds over 1,000 years of history within its exhibits.

With its large swimming pool and impressive water slide, as well as countless ball sports and a gym, Tenterden Leisure Centre is also a great spot to spend a couple of hours on an easy activity we know families will enjoy.

Set close to Kent’s border with East Sussex, Tenterden is conveniently located for exploring lovely attractions in both countries. Nearby, you’ll find the medieval town of Rye, beautiful Sissinghurst Castle, the historic market town of Cranbrook, Bodiam Castle, Northiam’s Great Dixter House & Gardens, and scenic Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest.
