Old railway carriages make surprisingly good interiors… Check out Channel View, Dungeness or Sunray, they have both beautifully preserved parts of the original railway carriage retained inside the holiday home. East and West Cottages are both former lighthouse keepers cottages set at the foot of the historic roundhouse in Dungeness with great views of the Lighthouse. If the walls could talk, they would tell you a tale or two of the former lives of the lighthouse keepers, dating back to the early 19th century.
Dungeness remains a place of escape for holidaymakers, especially being only around two hours drive from central London. Check out Fog Signal Building, Pump Station, Coastguard Lookout or North Vat if you want an unusual stay. What’s in the area
Artists including Derek Jarman and Pink Floyd have used Dungeness’ alien landscape for their work and Derek Jarman’s house, Prospect Cottage, was recently saved for the nation to serve as ongoing inspiration for future generations. One of the best ways to see Dungeness is by hopping on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a spectacular daytime trip for adults and children alike. Home to a third of all British plant species (which in turn draws in an incredible array of insects and birds), Dungeness’ National Nature Reserve is spread across a vast swathe of shingle headland and is one of the best spots nationally for uncovering the country’s biodiversity. It’s this juxtaposition with its barren backdrop that’s formed a source of inspiration for local artists, drawing them to open a range of studios and galleries that are perfect for spending an afternoon to browse.
The Grade II-listed Old Lighthouse is also worthy of a visit – climb to the top to reach its lookout, from which you can see for miles across the town and Romney Marsh.
Couples can enjoy a quiet, romantic walk along the desolate – yet beautiful – shingle beach, or head straight to the National Nature Reserve, which is home to four nature trails and multiple birding hides. We recommend stopping by the RSPB Visitor Centre and hiring some binoculars to ensure you spot the best of the area’s spectacular wildlife.
Dungeness is perfectly located for exploring southern Kent or even the fringes of Sussex; the charming town of Rye is a mere half-hour drive away and features gorgeous medieval half-timbered houses, within which flows plenty of literary inspiration. Venture a little further to Camber Sands to enjoy its sandy beach and dunes, or stay nearby and enjoy a trip to the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway for a scenic ride through the countryside.
