Sitting pretty on Kent’s east coast, the towns of Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich offer up the perfect mix of history, seaside charm, and local flavour. Whether you’re looking to embrace the coastal air, wander medieval streets, or tuck into some of the best seafood around, this trio of towns has plenty to keep you busy.
Deal is one of those towns that’s effortlessly stylish without trying too hard. With its pebble beach, maritime past, and an ever-growing scene of independent shops and restaurants, it’s no wonder it’s a favourite among weekenders and creatives alike.
A great way to start your day is with a coffee and breakfast from The Lane, before taking a slow stroll along Deal Pier. Originally built in 1957, it’s the last remaining fully intact pier in Kent and a great spot for panoramic views of the English Channel.
History buffs will love Deal Castle, an impressive Tudor artillery fortress commissioned by Henry VIII that stands as a testament to England’s coastal defences. Characterised by rounded bastions and robust walls, this castle offers visitors a glimpse into the past through a wandering of its storied corridors, where you can immerse yourself in the tales of yesteryear.
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with 81 Beach Street, a smart seaside bistro where Modern British cooking and European flavours meet. If you’re after something a little more casual, Middle Street Fish Bar serves up some of the best fish and chips in town.
Many an afternoon can be spent delving into Deal’s seafaring past at the town’s quaint museum, where exhibits showcase the town’s evolution from its days as a significant port to its current status as a beloved seaside resort. If you’ve got time, we can also recommend taking the circular walk from Deal to Walmer Castle – an easy, scenic route that spans the seafront.
Just a pebble’s throw along the coast from Deal, Walmer is great for those seeking a quieter, greener getaway, and is home to some of the area’s most impressive history.
Walmer Castle & Gardens is a must-visit, with its immaculately kept grounds and fascinating history as the former residence of the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports. The Queen Mother was particularly fond of it, and her namesake garden remains one of the prettiest spots in Kent.
Loved locally for its tranquility – it’s much less crowded than Deal on warmer days – Walmer Beach offers many a relaxing spot for whiling away the afternoon by the sea. We recommend picking up a coffee from Goose on the Green, before enjoying a peaceful wander along the promenade to Kingsdown. Here, you can indulge in a hearty pub food – or, on Sundays, a generous roast – at any number of local taverns, including The Rising Sun.
You’ll step back in time when you visit Sandwich, one of England’s best-preserved medieval towns. Its narrow streets are lined with timber-framed houses, giving the charming impression you’ve walked straight into a history book.
The Guildhall Museum, housed in a fantastic 16th-century building, is a great way to properly delve into the town’s maritime heritage and past.
Beyond the historic sites, the area offers numerous opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Cyclists can explore the scenic coastal routes stretching from Deal to Sandwich, offering breathtaking views of the English Channel. The Secret Gardens of Sandwich at The Salutation also offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle, with beautifully landscaped grounds that feature a mix of formal designs and wildflower meadows.
Birdwatchers and nature lovers alike will enjoy the nearby Sandwich Bay and the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve, home to a diverse range of wildlife. Meanwhile, if golf is your thing, Sandwich is also home to the renowned Royal St George’s Golf Club, a prestigious venue that has hosted The Open Championship multiple times. Even if you’re not teeing off, we think it’s well worth a visit just to take in the atmosphere – as well as the sweeping views across the Kent coast.
For food, there are several options for visitors. No Name Deli is a great shout for a casual lunch, while the historic The George & Dragon offers a cosy pub setting with a menu chock-full of locally sourced dishes.
For those planning an extended visit, the Deal area offers a variety of holiday cottages that cater to different tastes and group sizes. From cosy retreats perfect for couples to spacious homes ideal for families, our holiday lets are designed to provide a comfortable base from which to explore the town and its surroundings.
For a luxurious seaside stay, Beadles at Sandwich Bay is a great option for larger groups. This elegant period property, sleeping 12, is located just a short walk from the coast, and offers guests a stay with style, comfort, and easy access to all the best bits of Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich.
If you’re making a weekend of it, consider staying at Regency Beach House. Sleeping 14, this beautiful Georgian home looks over the Walmer seafront, and boasts an east-facing sun terrace for private lounging through the mornings.
Fancy something a little more remote? We also have two properties just down the road from Sandwich in Ash: Each Manor Farm Oast, a modern eight-sleeper with an outdoor pool and sweeping views across the countryside, and The Willows, a bright and airy escape for eight featuring a hot tub.
