What’s in the area

Whitstable is famously synonymous with oysters, and no trip would be complete without trying them. Wheeler’s Oyster Bar, painted in its signature pink, is a high-street icon, while The Lobster Shack serves seafood right on the beach. Away from the eateries, the town’s boutique shops offer everything from artwork and handmade jewellery to antiques and maritime gifts, making a stroll along the high street a highlight for any stay in Whitstable.

Whitstable is home to several places of interest that are popular with visitors, including the iconic beach huts at Tankerton Beach, and the beautiful Whitstable Castle. With its independent shops and cafés, the high street offers a unique shopping experience that’s complimented perfectly by a visit to Whitstable Harbour, where local artisans and makers sell their various wares. No visit to Whitstable would be complete without ending the day at The Old Neptune on the seafront, a pub with a traditional, English feel where you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer while watching the sun slowly set below the horizon.

For something different, why not visit the famous Whitstable Oyster beds with a boat tour? Here, you’ll learn about the production process of oysters from seed to plate, exploring the science behind sustainable oyster aquaculture before tucking into the delightful combination of freshly shucked oysters and a glass of Kent sparkling wine.

Delve into Whitstable’s history at the volunteer-run Whitstable Museum, where you can while away a couple of hours uncovering local maritime stories, browsing exhibits on the town’s oyster and fishing industry, and visiting its most famous display, Invicta, which is one of the world’s oldest railway locomotives. Just a couple of doors up the road, Fishslab Gallery is host to an eclectic and varied array of ever-changing exhibitions, and is another great way to escape the rain, as you discover its array of pottery, paintings, sculptures, and photography.

Some of the most beautiful coastal walks and bike rides can be found in and around Whitstable, with footpaths and cycle routes available all the way to Canterbury, Faversham and more.

For a real treat, we recommend paying a visit to acclaimed Michelin restaurant The Sportsman. Blessed by the bounty of the Thames Estuary, the kitchen offers a five-course menu that changes every day, epitomising exemplary culinary artistry as it seamlessly blends cherished classics with daring innovations. Wander back to your Whitstable holiday cottage via the village of Seasalter for a picturesque treat, its seafront providing a beautiful – and quiet! – end to a romantic evening.

Originally called Tankerton Towers, Whitstable Castle was built in the 1790s as a grand residence for the local Pearson family. Today, families can enjoy a leisurely stroll through its beautifully maintained gardens and manicured lawns, and there’s even a play area for little ones.

In Tankerton, the Blue Flag beach merges seamlessly with Whitstable beach, offering a serene escape for families seeking a day by the shore. Whatever the season, visitors can elevate their seaside experience by renting a beach hut, where they’ll receive front-row seats to the beach’s beautiful vistas, as well as a convenient base for fun-filled seaside activities.
