What’s in the area

Sandwich is a golfer’s paradise, here you’ll find the world-famous Royal St. George’s and Prince’s golf courses on the doorstep as well as the Royal Cinque Ports. Alternatively, for some traditional seaside fun, hop on a bike and take the ancient highway to Deal for ice cream on the pier, or take in the history with a visit to Deal Castle. Just around the corner is Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, which offers wildlife walks, evening strolls, and informative talks for nature and wildlife lovers.

Sandwich’s mix of history, nature, and local charm makes it a fascinating place to visit. Pay a visit to the historic White Mill – built in 1760, the windmill still has most of its original wooden machinery, and has an adjoining museum, the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre, which features exhibits of agricultural equipment from a much-forgotten era. Situated in a 16th-century guildhall in the heart of the town, the Sandwich Guildhall Museum builds on the town’s history by telling the rich and varied story of Sandwich through the ages, from its early beginnings to the present day.

For the best of the outdoors, we can highly recommend a visit to Betteshanger Country Park. The park is host to a whole calendar of activities and events, and is an excellent way to spend a day – regardless of whether you’re a group, couple, or have children or dogs in tow.

One of the best preserved medieval towns in England, Sandwich is a fascinating and idyllic location for a stroll, and has many picturesque attractions in its midst. Meander through its historic streets, visit the beautiful Secret Gardens of Sandwich (free during winter), enjoy a walk along the River Stour, or wander down to enjoy the sea breeze at Sandwich Bay – all of Sandwich’s free activities exude charm, and offer a relaxing activity for your trip.

Families will love the interactive exhibits at the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre, exploring the Secret Gardens of Sandwich, or taking a boat trip along the River Stour. The town’s parks and open spaces provide plenty of room for kids to play and explore.

Visit the historic Deal Castle and Walmer Castle in Deal, then head to Sandwich to explore the beautiful White Mill Rural Heritage Centre and the Secret Gardens of Sandwich. Both towns offer charming streets and local shops to explore.
