Sitting high on a sandstone hill overlooking the surrounding marshes, Rye is one of England’s most popular small towns, with Mermaid Street being perhaps the most photographed in the southeast. Rich in history, the town’s buildings and cobbled streets have remained largely unchanged over the past 500 years, providing a scenic backdrop for sightseeing and taking photographs.

Visitors can learn about the town’s medieval history at the Rye Heritage Centre and Rye Castle (Ypres Tower), or pay a visit to Lamb House – home of author E.F. Benson, and the setting of his Mapp and Lucia series – to delve into the town’s literary heritage. You can also explore the town’s diverse array of independent shops, inns, tea shops and cafés, before venturing to the top of the church tower and Gun Gardens to enjoy the best views Rye’s elevated position has to offer.

Weekends in Rye were made for strolling through the town’s pretty cobbled streets – including Mermaid Street – and enjoying a touch of retail therapy across its many independent shops.

No trip to Rye would be complete without paying a visit to the 600-year-old Mermaid Inn, a historic building featuring sloping ceilings, creaking floorboards and numerous staircases. Wander through the Linen Fold Panelled Restaurant, explore The Giants’ Fireplace Bar, and peep into Dr Syns Bed Chamber to uncover a secret passageway behind the bookcase, topping your visit off with a local ale, or a choice of 52 gins and more than 90 whiskies.

Nearby attractions include the scenic Camber Sands Beach, the pretty, historic town of Winchelsea, and – slightly further afield – the unique headland of Dungeness. The Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is also a short drive away and offers beautiful landscapes and wildlife.
