As the festive season draws near, with it comes the tradition of the open-water ‘winter dip’ in Kent – an opportunity to add a touch of enjoyment, invigoration, and bonding (not to mention bravery!) to the winter festivities. 

All across the county, beaches, and lakes play host to dozens of dips, which welcome locals and visitors alike to brave icy waters for charity and camaraderie. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned dipper, these events promise an invigorating experience that adds a touch of something different to your Kent holiday that you’ll cherish well into the new year.

Cold water swimming is also said to offer incredible health benefits, including boosting circulation, mental clarity, and resilience, among others – something we could all probably benefit from after a few too many mince pies!

So, as we approach the end of the year, we’ve pulled together a guide to confirmed winter dips in Kent in 2024, from Boxing Day plunges to New Year’s Day celebrations, as well as dos and don’ts for first-timers. Read on and ready yourself for a festive activity that requires a fair bit of bravery – but guarantees lots of laughs and a jolly good time.

Whitstable Winter Dip – Boxing Day

Shake off the post-Christmas haze with Whitstable RNLI’s Boxing Day dip. This winter dip promises an exhilarating plunge on Boxing Day afternoon – perfect for those who are feeling brave amid the chilly temperatures!

All proceeds go directly to the RNLI, ensuring your courage helps fund their vital work of saving lives at sea. Rally your family or friends for this fun-filled charity event, before returning to the warmth of the indoors (perhaps by the log burners at Plum Pudding Cottage?).

 

Folkestone Sunny Sands Beach Winter Dip – Boxing Day

Organised by the Folkestone Lions Club, Folkestone’s Boxing Day Dip is a much-loved local pastime that combines goodwill with even better vibes. Participants, affectionately called ‘Dippers’, are encouraged to fundraise for their charity of choice, then on the day taking to the water for a maximum of three minutes (just enough time to feel the thrill).

Visitors to Folkestone can wander down to join in with the laughs, shouts, and squeals at 9:30am, when registration starts. The Mariners Fancy Dress judging will be held at 11am, then it’s go-time at 11:30, when everyone runs into the water. Expect prizes for the best costumes, and medals are awarded to first-time and seasoned dippers alike.

Ramsgate Main Sands Winter Dip – New Year’s Day

Kick off the new year with an invigorating dip at Ramsgate Main Sands – all in support of Ronald McDonald Houses. This annual tradition combines community spirit and fundraising with lively entertainment, to help the joviality of the dip last long into the afternoon.

Those visiting from Ramsgate and its surrounds should aim to meet at the Queen’s Head pub from 11am – perfect for a sip of Dutch courage – before the group heads to the beach for the big dip at midday. Each participant will receive a medal to mark their achievement, and are invited to join the continued celebrations back at the pub at 1:30pm, where you can warm up with a bowl of hot soup and enjoy live music from Soul Thing.

 

Chipstead Lake, Sevenoaks Winter Dip – New Year’s Day

Start 2026 with a focus on physical and mental wellbeing at Chipstead Lake, Sevenoaks, as TriSwim hosts its 10th annual New Year’s Day Dip. From 9am to 10:30am, guests are invited to enjoy a dip in the lake, before enjoying hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire pits while taking in the lake’s beautiful decorations.

Participants will receive a small goodie bag to bring a positive start to the new year, and are encouraged to write New Year’s resolutions and affirmations on paper to toss into the fire pit – a ritual that it’s said brings good luck to your hopes for the new year.

 

St Andrews Lakes Winter Dip – Boxing Day & New Year’s Day

Why not escape the post-Christmas lull with a winter dip or serene paddleboard session at St Andrews Lakes, easily accessible from Maidstone? Nestled in a picturesque former quarry, these one-hour sessions from 10-11am cater to all skill levels, with qualified instructors on-hand to guide beginners.

For dippers, do note that all swimmers at St Andrews Lakes must have first been inducted in the lake’s open water swimming sessions – designed to make sure visitors feel safe on the water. We reckon the extra effort is well-worth it, since you can expect to be rewarded with the incredible scenery of the lakes during your dip, as well as an add-on option for sauna and jacuzzi access – all while wearing a fancy dress costume of your choice (optional).

Paddleboarders, meanwhile, can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the lake and its surrounds on their boards – the most skilled of which may even manage to keep dry! Safety gear is required for paddlers (i.e. life jacket, ankle leash, etc), and under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. Don’t forget to bring your own paddleboard to skip the queues!

 

Tips for First-Time Dippers

  1. Bring warm clothes for post-swim: Prepare for the cold with layers, hats, gloves, and towels, so you’re ready to bundle up as soon as you’re out of the water. Bonus points for a DryRobe!
  2. Pack hot food/drinks: A hot chocolate or soup in a flask will help bring you warmth once you’re out of the chill of the sea.
  3. Safety first: It’s always wise to double-check the safety requirements of your dip and follow organiser guidelines.
  4. Invite friends and family: Festive swims are best enjoyed with loved ones cheering you on – or joining in!
