Great Dixter House & Gardens

Few gardens have influenced modern gardening quite like Great Dixter. Created by celebrated gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd, this remarkable house and garden has become a pilgrimage site for gardeners from around the world due to its embracing of bold planting, unexpected colour combinations, and wildflower meadows that change throughout the seasons.
The medieval manor house is equally fascinating. Dating back to the 15th century, its timber-framed rooms are filled with antiques, tapestries and centuries of history, making Great Dixter as rewarding for history lovers as it is for keen gardeners. Throughout the year, the gardens also host specialist gardening courses, talks and seasonal events, making it one of East Sussex’s most dynamic horticultural destinations.
Pashley Manor Gardens

Situated close to the Kent border, Great Dixter is one of the South East’s finest examples of a classic English country garden. Spanning 11 acres, the award-winning gardens combine elegant herbaceous borders, sweeping lawns, ornamental ponds and woodland walks with carefully curated seasonal planting.
Spring is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the gardening calendar here. The annual Tulip Festival transforms the estate with tens of thousands of tulips, while carpets of bluebells emerge beneath the trees, creating one of the county’s most photographed displays. Throughout the remainder of the year, be sure to keep an eye out for the sculptures dotted throughout the grounds, while rotating exhibitions add another layer of interest. The café overlooking the gardens provides the perfect excuse to linger a little longer before heading home.
Sheffield Park and Garden

Designed with input from the legendary landscape architect Lancelot “Capability” Brown, Sheffield Park is one of the National Trust’s most spectacular landscapes. Its four interconnected lakes reflect colourful trees and dramatic planting throughout the seasons, making it especially popular with photographers. Spring brings daffodils, rhododendrons and azaleas, while autumn transforms the landscape into one of Britain’s finest displays of fiery reds, oranges and golds.
Wide, accessible paths make Sheffield Park ideal for families, while its lakeside walks offer a wonderfully peaceful escape into nature. Nearby, the Bluebell Railway adds intrigue and character with its steam locomotives and small railway museum, while the picturesque village of Newick has plenty of pubs and restaurants to stop in for excellent food and drink.
Merriments Gardens

Tucked away behind tall hedges, Merriments Gardens is a hidden gem offering inspiration for gardeners and nature lovers alike. Spanning four acres, its colourful borders, woodland planting, gravel gardens and kitchen garden provide year-round interest, from spring tulips and camassia to vibrant summer blooms and spectacular autumn colour.
Water features, a medicinal herb garden and a peaceful bird hide add to its relaxed atmosphere, while the on-site nursery has plenty of plants – so you can take a little inspiration home with you.
Charleston Garden
Address: Firle, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 6LL
Best known as the former home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston may be most visited for its art-filled home, but its garden is just as inspiring as the house itself.
Designed as an extension of their artistic vision, the informal garden mixes Mediterranean planting, traditional cottage flowers and colourful borders that feel wonderfully relaxed and creative. Sculptures, ceramics and unexpected details appear throughout the grounds, reflecting the bohemian spirit of the Bloomsbury Group.
After exploring the gardens, heading into the house offers a fascinating glimpse into one of Britain’s most influential artistic communities.
Bateman’s
Address: Bateman’s Lane, Burwash, East Sussex, TN19 7DS
Hidden away in the Sussex countryside, Bateman’s was once the much-loved home of author Rudyard Kipling and remains one of the National Trust’s most atmospheric properties. Particularly appealing to literature lovers, the property offers a fantastic opportunity to step into the surroundings that inspired many of Kipling’s later works.
The gardens are beautifully understated, featuring a traditional walled garden, orchard, mill pond and informal planting that perfectly complement the Jacobean house. Beyond the formal gardens, peaceful woodland trails and riverside walks offer a tranquil setting for a longer afternoon outdoors.
Driftwood Garden

Perched high above the iconic white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, Driftwood Garden is one of East Sussex’s most unusual hidden treasures.
Created over many years by local gardener, the gardens now opens on appointment through the National Garden Scheme, and makes imaginative use of coastal planting, driftwood sculptures and spectacular sea views. Every corner reflects its clifftop setting, blending naturally with the surrounding landscape.
If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of its open days, it’s easy to combine your trip with a walk across the nearby Seven Sisters Country Park, making for one of the county’s most memorable days out.
