This autumn, join us as we celebrate the 40 years of Canterbury Festival.

Every autumn, the city of Canterbury comes alive with one of the most anticipated events in the entire Kent county: Canterbury Festival. Held across several venues within our historic city, the festival is a celebration of music, theatre, comedy, talks, and family-friendly activities, making it a must-visit for lovers of the arts who plan on coming to Kent in October or November. What’s more, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the festival – meaning visitors can expect even more celebrations!

So… What exactly is Canterbury Festival?

Running for two weeks from Saturday 19 October to Saturday 2 November, Canterbury Festival showcases an exciting line-up of performances and cultural events. Across 15 days, the festival schedule packs in more than 100 events, covering everything from concerts and cutting-edge theatre to stand-up comedy and family shows.

Where is the festival held?

Performances take place in multiple venues across Canterbury, including the Marlowe Theatre, the Shirley Hall, and Canterbury Cathedral, among others. Each venue adds its own unique atmosphere to the event, from the grandeur of the cathedral to the more intimate settings of the city’s hidden gems.

More things to do in Canterbury during the festival

While the festival is the city’s star attraction during autumn, there’s plenty more to see and do in Canterbury during your visit. True to its medieval roots, Canterbury is divided into a series of easy-to-navigate historic neighbourhoods, each boasting its own unique character – making exploring it a pleasure. Wander the many independent boutiques of the King’s Mile and Cathedral Quarter, or stop by the superb cafés amid the cobbled streets of the Castle Quarter, and you’ll be treated to several perspectives of the city.

We also recommend paying a visit to Canterbury Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece that’s one of the oldest Christian structures in England and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally, boat tours on the River Stour, a walk through Westgate Gardens, or an amble around Augustine Abbey provide an excellent addition to any visit to Canterbury.
