Landgate, a beautifully appointed two bedroom flat, is the ultimate bolt-hole. Oh-so- smart on the inside with interior designer vibes, its location, looking at Rye’s historic Landgate (dated 1329) means you’ll just want to get out to see everything Rye can offer.
But stay a while inside and you’ll find a bijou kitchen with everything you need; locally handmade ceramic espresso cups, beautiful glassware. On the first floor the smaller bedroom with two single beds, is lined with books and beautiful things. There’s a family bathroom and a light, bright lounge with a huge sofa and, of course, a window seat to sit on and stare at almost a thousand years’ worth of Rye right outside.
Upstairs the large double bedroom shares the same view from a large bed with plenty of room for reclaimed and vintage furniture. Its location above one of Rye’s favourite independent wine shops encourages a browse and a slow-down glass of something lovely looking at the view.
So close-you-can-touch- it Rye’s ancient centre fans out around you here. Walking through the Landgate you climb further up through the town and you can see Camber, Dungeness and other points on the English coast. Rye’s geography - its cobbled narrow streets, hidden gardens, just out-of-sight private houses make it a fascinating place to explore. Weave in its May Day, Bonfire and other festive traditions and it holds irresistible stories that’ll make you stay for longer each time, not to mention its artsy side with jazz festivals and theatre popping up across the summer months.
