Once home to the Kent Opera, the house retains subtle nods to its theatrical past, from colourful details and small touches throughout the interior to the wonderfully whimsical cloudscape above the master bedroom’s four-poster bed. The ground floor centres around a generous dining space and a kitchen tucked just beyond, which is well-equipped for everything from strong cafetiere coffee and leisurely breakfasts to dinners enjoyed together at the end of the day. Two beautifully individual bedrooms add plenty of character, with the highlight being the indulgent four-poster bed beneath the towering oast ceiling, which has been hand-painted with a dramatic cloud scene so you can wake to the view of wide, open skies each morning. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, too – one with a shower and spacious bath, and another with a pretty painted shower – allowing mornings to be as slow as you’d like.
Outside, pretty, expansive gardens surround the house, complete with a duck pond and plenty of wildlife to watch. Swallows, ducklings, barn owls, buzzards and woodpeckers all make appearances here, while bats can be spotted after dark. We highly recommend taking your morning coffee out to the patio set – you may even be joined by the owners’ cats playing in the garden.
The Oast at Pembles Cross is particularly lovely for couples seeking a romantic countryside break, with walking and cycling routes leading from the doorstep, canoe paddles down the River Stour, and plenty of local knowledge to draw on. Situated in the grounds of the owner's home, the friendly owners, who have lived in the village for several years, are always happy to share their recommendations – so do make sure to quiz them on their favourite pubs, walks and places to visit!
And when the day is done, there’s nowhere quite like coming home to this little corner of the Kent countryside – whether that means a glass of something cold in the garden, a game around the dining table, or drifting off beneath a sky full of clouds.
