February half-term often gets a bad rap, stuck between Christmas and spring, with chilly weather and fewer sunny days. But who says February can’t still be fun? Whether you’re wrapping up for crisp outdoor adventures (albeit dodging puddles!), or staying indoors to try something new, Kent’s got plenty to keep the whole family entertained. And when it’s time to wind down, you’ll need the perfect holiday home to recharge. That’s where we come in.
Here’s our guide to making this February half-term in Kent one to remember.
Step into the shoes of a Dockyard worker and become an apprentice deckhand for the day at Chatham Dockyard, whose Dockyard Deckhands event offers a fantastic half-day out for families. The museum’s immersive exhibitions and galleries – stretched across its historic warships – offer fascinating insights into life on the seas, which you can enjoy alongside learning real maritime skills and discovering the trades that once brought the Dockyard to life.
For those with little ones to entertain, set your sights on a trip to Kent Life. Younger kids will love meeting the animals on the farm, including pigs, sheep, donkeys, goats and alpacas, and can even join in with some of their feeding sessions. Alternatively, get creative in the Paint-a-Pot studio, visit the Kent Owl Academy, or enjoy puppet and magic shows – all perfect if the weather isn’t playing ball.
This February half-term, Leeds Castle invites families to join them on an enchanting exploration of the medieval royal court, where they’ll learn all about the hallmarks of a traditional royal ball. Prepare for a captivating experience, where you’ll learn the essential skills and processes that defined royal existence in medieval times – from learning to walk with the poise of true royalty, to choosing your very own royal persona. Don your finest attire and prepare to dance with elegance!
From 11th February, Hever Castle’s enchanting First Signs of Spring event offers a gentle and picturesque way to celebrate the arrival of spring. Stroll through gardens adorned with over 160,000 snowdrops, including a delightful mix of single and double varieties, as well as rare blooms. Alongside the snowdrops, enjoy the vibrant blossoms of early-season flowers, making this a truly magical outing to embrace the beauty of nature.
Spread across 600 acres, Port Lympne Reserve is an immersive safari experience with over 900 animals across 75 species, including giraffes, zebras, tigers, lions, and gorillas, as well as the UK’s largest herd of black rhinos. We know your little ones will be amazed as they explore the park’s African, Asian, and South American zones, as they also learn about the park’s dedication to the conservation of rare and endangered species.
With a rich history spanning over 120 years, the Kent & East Sussex Railway was the first light passenger railway in Britain, and today is one of the country’s most loved and original heritage lines. Ride the train along 10 1/2 miles of Wealden countryside, spotting birds along the way, and stop at Tenterden for the family fun trail – all activities contribute to a brilliant afternoon out.
The 40-acre Wildwood Trust is home to over 200 British species, including bears, wolves, and arctic foxes. For hands-on fun, book a Junior Animal Experience like the Wallaby Experience or Junior Zookeeper Experience – perfect for budding wildlife enthusiasts.
The 250-acre Betteshanger Park between Deal and Sandwich is a fantastic option for adventurous families, with cycling, geocaching, and archery all on offer. During this February half-term, the park is also hosting a Dino Hunt – a treasure trail that’s a great activity for young explorers, running from Saturday 14th February to the last Friday of March.
Aspiring young conservationists can enjoy free entry to Howletts this February half-term to discover how the park is protecting endangered animals and supporting their return to the wild. Children aged 0–15 years will be admitted free throughout half-term, from the 13th to the 22nd February, when tickets are purchased online.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek the Musical comes to the Malthouse Theatre this half-term, bringing all the beloved characters from the film to the stage. This Tony Award-winning adventure features all new songs, and a new take on the much-loved tale.
High above the White Cliffs, Dover Castle offers a good few hours of history and adventure. Kids can enjoy the Siege play area and the Dover Castle Under Siege exhibition, while history-loving families will find enjoyment in wandering the Secret Wartime Tunnels. Nearby, you can also enjoy the region’s natural attractions, such as Samphire Hoe, a reserve created from Channel Tunnel spoil, or visiting penguins, chimps, and moon bears at Wingham Wildlife Park.
When the weather turns, or if you’re looking for something more active to help burn off energy, head to Airhop at Westwood Cross in Broadstairs for a couple of hours’ adventure – whether it’s trampolining, or laser tag, Airhop has it all. For curious minds, there’s also the Shell Grotto, Ramsgate Tunnels, and Margate Caves nearby, offer fascinating subterranean worlds (visit the Turner Contemporary while you’re in the area!), while Thanet’s Escape Rooms and Lost Island Adventure Golf are perfect for older kids and teens.
