There’s something magical about autumn in Kent and East Sussex. As the warmth of summer fades, the air turns crisp and cool, and the Weald glows with fiery shades of orange, days start to feel much better suited for long walks, hearty pub meals, and an evening cosied up by the fire.
Whether you’re looking to feel the crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet exploring ancient forests, or want to tuck yourself away in a cosy pub, our corner of England proves time and time again that it’s one of the most rewarding places to spend the season.
Below, we’ve rustled up the best things to do across the South East this autumn – as well as our cosiest holiday homes to retreat back to after a day spent exploring.
Autumn is when Kent and East Sussex’s landscapes really shine. The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers mile after mile of woodland trails and rolling hills, perfect for family rambles or brisk morning walks. Golden hour is best viewed from the sheep pastures of Romney Marsh, which offers the most remarkable sunsets. There’s also Ashdown Forest, its sweeping heathland and ancient woodland especially atmospheric this time of year. Famously the inspiration for A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh series, the forest and nearby town of Hartfield feature many a reference to the much-loved books, offering a multitude of things to do whether you’re a family or simply a lover of literature.
Home to the largest conifer collection in the world, Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest is a fantastic option for those more active among us, courtesy of its wide tracks for cycling and walking offering a picturesque experience as its trees span all colours this season. Alternatively, Knole Park in Sevenoaks sees families of wild deer graze among its 1,000 acres of parkland, making it a magical spot for a stroll.

Gone are the evenings of al fresco meals and Aperol Spritz on the terrace – autumn is officially the season for slowing down (preferably by a warm fire). After a bracing walk outdoors, there’s nothing better than ducking into a welcoming country pub for a roast. Across Kent and East Sussex, you’ll find roaring fires, low-beamed ceilings, and menus brimming with local, seasonal produce (think game pies, bowls of steaming soup, and a pint of craft ale or a glass of sparkling wine). Even better? Most pubs in the countryside are dog-friendly, meaning you can bring your four-legged friends along for the journey.
For those who prefer coffee and a slice of cake to a pint by the fire, autumn is also the perfect excuse to explore the local café scene. From artisan roasters in Canterbury to Italian-style delis in Sandgate, our best cafés in Kent guide rounds up some of Bloom Stays’ favourite spots to warm up on a rainy day – as chosen by our team.
The season also brings a huge calendar of food festivals to mark the harvest, bonfire nights, and seasonal fairs across the region. Wherever you find yourself, there’ll be local farm shops for pumpkin-picking and autumn markets for handmade crafts. Or, plan a trip around Lewes’ famous November bonfire celebration — an unforgettable East Sussex tradition with societies that started more than 175 years ago. Stuck for things to do with the kids? There’s also our guide to October half-term, which lists all the major family-friendly events to enjoy during the autumn school break.
Whether you’re drawn to the woodlands of the Weald, the windswept beauty of Ashdown Forest, or simply the promise of a good pub lunch after a day outdoors, autumn in Kent and East Sussex has a rhythm all of its own. And with a stay in one of our cosy holiday cottages, you’ll have the perfect base for exploring it all — complete with a warm kitchen, comfortable lounge, and the chance to wind down as the autumn leaves fall outside your window.
The ideal spot for some quiet “us” time, The Potting Shed near Hartfield places guests in the stunning landscape of the Sussex countryside, where you can gaze at the night sky while soaking in the double outdoor bathtubs. Every inch of this studio is warm and welcoming, from its original beams and rustic decor, to the king-sized bed (complete with luxury bedding). After a day of exploring Winnie-the-Pooh country, guests are invited to make the most of the fully-equipped kitchen, and can finish with marshmallows around the fire pit.
Two properties offer completely different experiences in Peasmarsh, which is a great location for exploring the High Weald, Romney Marsh, and wander the lovely medieval town of Rye. Shepherd hut Pelsham View (sleeps 2) has been beautifully crafted for comfort, its bifold doors opening right on to vast farm fields, providing guests with the utmost in rural relaxation. Meanwhile, Pelsham Farm Cottage (sleeps 8) is a great option for a quieter family stay, with a wall of books calling out to be read as you curl up on one of many comfy sofas. These properties are also very close to Tillingham vineyard, which has many of its own events and tasting tours, as well as a Michelin green star award-winning restaurant for guests to enjoy.
Nestled within the Romney Marsh and plentiful countryside walks, The Georgian House (sleeps 8) is a beautiful example of Georgian architecture where groups can indulge in period living, with elegant rooms steeped in original features (including an open fire). Large, floor-to-ceiling windows look out to this home’s expansive, enclosed garden, alongside spacious lawns ideal for a competitive garden game or two – so long as the weather holds!
If cosy pubs and cafés are more your scene, let us recommend the charming Cow Shed (sleeping 2), an idyllic retreat for couples wanting to fully unwind in the most tranquil of settings. Located near Tunbridge Wells, The Cow Shed benefits from the best of both worlds: trendy and upmarket dining when you fancy a day of wandering the town’s cobbled streets, and traditional village pubs when you fancy something a little closer to home. With high beamed ceilings and a cosy wood burner, guests can count on a cosy stay when they book here.
Experience the extraordinary when you holiday in this newly-renovated oast house at Bushes Oast (sleeps 5). This home has been beautifully decorated with a mix of antique and contemporary styles – and, what’s more, the king-size bedroom features its own roll-top bath for the ultimate luxury. The house and garden are set within a private estate and there are wonderful views from all rooms across the High Weald AONB. The famous Greensand Way is right on your doorstep, along with a handful of National Trust properties, while the town of Sevenoaks (and its much-loved Knole Park) is just a 10-minute drive away.
