Out on the shingle at Dungeness, Coastguard Lookout offers a stay unlike almost anywhere else on the Kent coast. Once an HM Coastguard radar station monitoring shipping in the Channel, this striking former lookout tower has been thoughtfully reimagined as a one-of-a-kind coastal retreat – contemporary, design-led, and completely immersed in its surroundings.

The building was transformed by interior architecture firm Johnson Naylor, who retained the original 1950s structure while introducing high-quality finishes to create a warm, understated interior that sits in harmony with the landscape around it. Limestone floors, underfloor heating, Wi-Fi, and a log burner bring comfort to the industrial shell, while panoramic windows make the most of the extraordinary setting – with views stretching across the Channel and, on clear days, as far as Cap Gris Nez in France.

With sea views in every direction, this is a place for properly switching off and immersing yourself in the landscape. Wake to the soft sounds of the sea, watch ships move slowly across the horizon, and step straight out into one of Britain’s most distinctive coastal settings – home to one of the country's most biodiverse habitats. Stark, peaceful, and endlessly atmospheric, Dungeness has plenty of character all of its own.

Beyond the tower, the landscape feels vast and almost otherworldly, with sweeping skies, shingle paths, and the unmistakable silhouette of the power station in the distance. Spend the day walking the beach, exploring the wider Romney Marsh area, or stopping off at one of the local pubs before returning to the warmth and comfort of the lookout.

For those seeking for a truly memorable Dungeness holiday cottage or a unique Kent coastal escape, Coastguard Lookout certainly leaves its mark – for all the right reasons.
