Steeped in historic splendour, The Tudor offers a distinctive stay in Sussex within the extraordinary setting of Wickham Manor near Winchelsea. Part of the 16th-century manor house, this one-bedroom retreat combines period detail, far-reaching views, and a genuine sense of sanctuary in the Sussex countryside.
Part of the historic 120-acre Wickham Manor estate, the manor lies within grounds once owned by William Penn, the eventual founder of the British proprietary colony of Pennsylvania more than 345 years ago. More recently, the manor has – under the care of the National Trust – been lovingly restored to reveal its period charm and has even appeared on screen (you may have seen it in Mr. Holmes and Netflix's The Crown). Today, it neighbours the family-run Charles Palmer Vineyard, where guests can enjoy a complimentary glass of Sussex wine during their stay, the vines providing a lovely backdrop.
Inside, the space is intimate yet striking, and guests are invited to indulge in the old world grandeur of the four-poster bed, swathed in luxurious fabrics and warmed by the log fire. With exposed beams throughout and beautiful wooden furnishings, every moment spent here breathes atmospheric period drama – whether you’re enjoying a slow breakfast, settling in with a book, or watching the sun go down over the landscape.
Beyond the manor, there’s plenty of space to appreciate the surroundings, from summer barbecues on the lawn to peaceful walks through the estate. The ancient hilltop town of Winchelsea is also within walking distance, while the cobbled streets, galleries, and independent cafés of Rye are just a short drive away.
Wherever your stay may take you, a unique romantic retreat awaits at The Tudor.
